I’ve followed To Write Love on Her Arms for a while and they do some good stuff at increasing awareness of teenage depression and self mutilation. It started out with some dude asking some bands to wear some t-shirts he made on stage to get some publicity. They did and when people started asking questions, a grass-roots movement was born.
It’s all about getting kids to support other kids who are faced with depression, addiction, cutting, mental illness, etc… It’s strength is that kids in rough situations rarely trust or turn to adult figures and adult figures rarely give the kids the attention or support they need. It’s about giving social networks the tools to help each other.
